Music: A Family Affair in the Gordon Family
By Angela Ardery

The Gordon family of Balch springs is Dr. Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon, Mayor Carrie Gordon, and Lil’ Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon that share a great bond of musical talent. The Gordon family lives and performs locally here in Balch Springs. Together as a family and individually they have performed all over the world.
Dr. Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon started his musical interest at age nine when he began playing the saxophone. He plays Jazz and Gospel music. Dr. Gordon continued to play his saxophone and started performing at age 15. He is a singer, song writer, musician producer, and engineer. He is a Grammy Nominator for a collaboration he did with the Jordonaires, Nokie Edwards, and the Light Crust Doughboys.
“Larry is a musicaholic,” says Mayor Carrie Gordon. “He pretty much sleeps music. I know how it moves him.”
Larry has played for many celebrities like Regis Philbin, Mart Hart, and Debbie Reynolds. He has also performed with James Brown, Willie Nelson, Chuck Berry, Tony Bennett, and many others. Larry also plays at local events with his band for the city.
Carrie Gordon started her music interest at age nine when she was singing and playing piano for her church. Her genera of music are Classic and Gospel. She began her career with music when she attended Bishop College where she met Larry Gordon. She singed lead and backup vocals. She is currently recording a vocal CD for her collection of music. Carrie Gordon is the mayor of Balch Springs, is a BMI songwriter, and is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science.
Lil’ Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon has been performing since the age of 4 influenced by his musically talented family. He has done many performances with his parents. Lil’ Larry made a debut in 2005 with a release of his “LyBEATrics” album. He has performed over 50 live solo performances in the past. He performs with 16-piece orchestra/show band.
“Music is something the family gets to share together,” said Mayor Gordon. “We’re all very passionate about it.”
Lil’ Larry also hosted a recent event in Balch Springs called Songwriter’s Workshop and Concert to help raise money for Haiti. The event had performances by Lil’ Larry, Dr Larry “T-Byrd”, and Rebecca Dena, and a workshop by Ahmande Grimes.
“Everyone worked hard and all the money raised went towards Haiti, for a great cause,” said Lil’ Larry. “Everyone had a great time.”
Even though the family shares an interest in music; their interest in genres are different. Their solo performances are the music they enjoy individually, but the music they perform together is a little of everything. They support each other in everything they do.
The Gordon family has traveled aboard and performed many events together. They also perform many events locally for the community at fundraisers and Art and Music performances.
